Not exactly. There were two basic classes of privateer ship:
1) Merchantmen armed for war. Similar to the basic "pirate ship," only a privateer -- as a licensed and legalised agent of his or her respective government -- could expect somewhat more reliable access to needed supplies and artillery.
2) Purpose-built privateer ships. Historically speaking, these typically appeared later on in a naval conflict -- basically as soon as private funds could be raised and a ship built and outfitted. In general build these ships are built more lightly than warships and less roomy than merchant ships, as they weren't expected to spend long months at sea but sortie against specific targets.
Obviously I'm painting history with a very broad brush here.
Plans of ships from our era (1660-1740) are rare enough, and "privateer ships" of either stripe much more so. One of the few I know about is already in-game, the 50-gun
Mordaunt which was purchased into the British navy. Chapman includes several purpose-built privateers in his
Architectura Navalis, but most of them are too modern in conception to be suited for the game.
In any case, as has already been mentioned, it's FLS's call whether or not to restrict a ship to any specific profession or not.
