You're right. The fact of the matter is that our dev staff is pretty small when it comes to the size of the project that we've built. We have a developer (Heidi) who is point person on graphics, but she also has other responsibilities on the project. Like everything, we do as much work as is needed on a particular piece, and then we stop and work on the next work item.
If this were a bigger project, she'd spend all her time on optimizations and the game would perform better. But that's true for everything. A year from now Crysis will run better than it does now. It's all a question of how much you have to spend, and where you spend it.
