Ah, but I don't think the customer is getting less. Let me give you an example from the movies. Compare Evil Dead to a James Bond film. The former is a shoe string production that doesn't have 1/10th the polish of a big budget Bond film. But the fact is, it's a different experience, and it's really cool as it is. Personally speaking, I'm willing to pay MORE for unique, varied experiences apart from the usual fare. I spend that money often by importing foreign films, or collecting old, cool games, and so on.
I hate it when people make reviews of games by assigning scores to sound, graphics, gameplay, story, etc., and then average them together. A game's value cannot be derived from the average of its elements, it's a complete experience that has to be evaluated as a whole.
