You will get connection reset by peer for other reasons too, such as upstream problems, a bad router, or your network interface dying, etc.

the connection error you're getting in our logs is a symptom of a greater problem which is causing your connections to get reset. It has nothing to do with the game.

I'd check:

Your NIC card and drivers (self diagnosis is available for some cards, if you have another card, try it)
Virus Scan, Spyware Scan, etc
Bypass your router.

If I had to guess, I'd say you have an OS level issue, or possibly a bad NIC.

No -- not if it is a "direct copy." In legal terms that would be a "slavish copy," which is generally considered not to have artistic merit of its own, and is thus not copyrightable. For more information I highly recommend reading the US Copyright Office's Copyright Office Basics. Prime resource for copyright questions.

As pertains to User Content, in a nutshell:

* Historic flags and other emblems exist as ideas. The idea itself is NOT copyrightable, so many people are free to make digital interpretations of it.

* So long as those interpretations differ in some way -- they're not slavish copies of each other -- all is well and good.

* Once someone makes a slavish copy -- either a pixel-for-pixel copy or something quite close, e.g. taking someone's flag and tweaking the color slightly or passing it through a photoshop filter -- they're crossing the line into unwelcome territory. Not only is that rude and unfair to the person who originally submitted the flag interpretation, but it in all likelihood violates Flying Lab Software's copyright, since by submitting the design FLS is granted ownership of that file. We don't like that and will respond as we see appropriate.

I hope that helps clear things up a bit.

1 in thread Japanese sail (work in progress) Idea. [Flags and Sails]
It was not possible, even with Japan's highly advanced textile industry throughout the Edo period, to either dye or paint an entire sail.

Dying would have to be done before the canvas was sewn into the sail; while this indeed was possible on a small scale in garments, temple banners, and the like, a sail is several orders of magnitude larger. It's not possible to match everything up with precision.

A painted sail would need to use some water-resistant and likely oil-based paint. Such tends to flake and chip very quickly when its support (i.e. the canvas) is handled roughly -- as in the everyday operation of furling and unfurling a sail.

This is why we send designs back for using gradients and painted effects, unless the painting successfully looks worn and flaked in the appropriate manner.

EDIT: Cross-posted. The catfish does look much more appropriate now, but you'll probably want to restore some of the outline of its belly. Right now, it looks a bit more like a shrimp swimming among the kelp

While we've tried to keep people updated throughout the process, I agree- we have to do a better job communicating what is going on behind the scenes with our User Content improvements.

It isn't that we aren't working on solutions; the challenge here is that we are so focused on the solutions that the communication of our plans suffered, and for that I apologize.

First, let me say that we will be coordinating approvals this week, starting on Wednesday. The team is in place, and we will be doing some final training tomorrow in order to prepare everyone for Wednesday's approvals.

Second, Marion is working on the final draft of her Devlog that explains the pending improvements to our User Content program. It is a massive overhaul that will change the manner in which we do everything, from voting to commenting. We are waiting for some final input from our Steering Committee members, and anticipate publishing Marion's Devlog to coincide with Wednesday's approvals.

Again, my sincerest apologies for the delay in communicating this process- the User Content program truly is a cornerstone feature for Pirates of the Burning Sea, and we have allocated the resources required to make sure the program is operating at the highest level of quality.

Best,
Aether

Finally. Chat is my number 1 complaint/frustration with this game. It’s buggy… and before you go about improving it, fix the bugs please.

And my #1 complaint about chat? Losing Chat focus.

1. Fix chat losing focus. Nothing is more frustrating than when I’m typing away and suddenly chat loses focus and 8 or 9 windows pop up. Things that cause chat focus to be lost: when group members enter or exit a mission, sometimes when group members zone, when any sort of pop up box appears, and sometimes at random for no reason. I type fast, and this is annoying. Chat will sometimes lose focus on my 3 times typing one sentence if I’m in a large group all they all begin to zone. The preference setting to stick chat focus is not acceptable… it’s annoying to have to click out of chat every time I don’t want it.

2. Hitting enter doesn’t always enter chat. Ideally with #1 and #2 fixed, I would hit enter, type up my message, hit enter again, and be back in normal mode.

3. Losing Chat focus. Yes I’m listing this again. It’s that annoying.

4. I voted that I don’t use additional windows. I in fact don’t like additional windows cluttering up my UI. I wouldn’t remove it though since people do use it.

5. The ability to add tabs. I would like to add my own custom tabs both for certain channels, and even tabs that are just tells to 1 specific person. I would actually like the option so that when anyone sends me a tell it automatically creates a tab for talking with just that person. (not everyone may like this though, so it’d have to be preferences option).

6. The chat box at the bottom needs to stick to the tab. If I’m on the Main tab and I set the box to Nation I want it to stay in Nation while on that tab. If I’m on the Group tab and I set the box to group I want it to stay on group. When I switch back to Nation that tab should still be on nation. I shouldn’t have to change the box every time I change tabs. If I setup a custom tab that is just for /tell John Smith, anything I type there should just tell to John Smith. Item #5 and 6 would go a long way to cutting down on mistells.

7. What check boxes do what needs to be better defined. Sure we all know what Nation, Local, Group, and Society do.. but sometimes it’s unclear what message show up in Town, or Mission, or some of the other categories.

8. Okay this next one we’ve been asking for the last year. I have even talked to some devs who’ve asked for this. Please Please separate group loot dice rolling from group chat. We need to be able to make it a different color and throw it over to the log tab. Group battle tactics and messages are constantly lost with loot dice rolling scrolling it off the screen.

That’s all I can think of for now.
This is excellent feedback! Thank you so much.
Happily, you'll see progress on much of this starting with the 1.2 patch, with on going improvements in future patches as well.

Right-click in the chat window and there's a button that says "New Window."

Normally, I like to have one window for ALL chat, but nothing else - particularly no loot/xp/system spam - and one window for system messages (combat log, XP/faction gain, loot, etc).

Still, I wouldn't in PotBS currently because the windows are so large, bulky, and cannot have transparency controls.

I really liked how WoW's chat windows could fade out entirely if there were no new entries in them.

For me, a MAJOR element of UI happiness is my ability to play with as little as possible on the screen at any given time. I *LOVE* UI elements that either become 100% transparent when unneeded or can be readily toggled off and on. I like to play the game, not the UI.
Starting with the 1.2 patch, some of these problems will be addressed. We're rearranging the tabs to be more like you say here- one main tab, an empty tab for you to use how you like and a third tab for system messages, etc.

We also have some new chat box art that is slimmer and way less clunky. It's a little more transparent, but we have to wait a little longer for more development on that aspect.
