The
Superbe was actually built before 1673, which was the year in which she visited England as part of the war effort against the Dutch. The kit-maker here claims she was built in 1708; I'm honestly not certain if another
Superbe was made in that year or not, but they go on to talk about how Charles II was impressed by the ship. Challenging, that, as Charles died in 1685.
The ship pictured here, with a modern double spritsail, chainwales above the upper deck, a gaff-and-boom mizzen sail, and other advanced features appears to date from circa 1790. Note the modern French flag at the stern as well, even though much of the d?r appears to be a potpourri of earlier styles.
In any case, the general thrust is: yes, some ships carried about 74 guns well before the game's time period. However, their layout was much different than the "classic 74," having fewer heavy guns and more lighter guns than eventually settled on in the 1760's. They were also much smaller, and a to-scale "classic 74" would look and feel very much out of place next to our other ships.
