Penzo's book is a great reference for Venetian ships circa 1700-1810 or so, but a disappointment from the modeller's perspective. All the plans in it are very small, and what few it contains from the PotBS time period don't provide enough information to make a true construction. If you're lucky, you get a midship section and a basic deck plan in addition to the side elevation -- enough for an 18th century Venetian shipwright to build from, with all his knowledge of how to infer the rest of the ship's frames from the "master," but this knowledge is nowhere written into the plans. Major reconstruction would be involved working from the appropriate draughts.
It's also chock full of 60-80 gun ships, which we currently aren't accepting for the game.
There is one gem in it, though: a large, 3-masted polacca. From the decoration and style of the plans it appears to be a bit late -- 1770's-1800? -- but there's nothing too untoward about it. Heck, see attached. We're not currently in need of more large Mediterranean craft, though.
