Hello gang,

Whilst there is some excellent discussion and some good debating going on, there's also a whole lot of flaming and trolling. Since there's more of the latter than the former, we'll close this one out.

If you'd like to have a discussion sans the personal attacks, please start another thread on the topic.

Hello all,

We do encourage people to discuss and even debate almost whatever they wish. As long as people do not break the PotBS Forum Rules & Expectations, you can discuss your thoughts on the game.

However, if you do want to respond to a post where folks have expressed frustration or dissatisfaction, you should also be following the PotBS Forum Rules & Expectations.

Specifically, these rules:

- Do not abuse new users
Remember that new users will not always know where to find information that may be common knowledge to the seasoned forum user.

-No Flaming
While debate and discussion are encouraged, we will not tolerate rude or insulting posts, personal attacks or inflammatory posts of any kind.

Specifically, we're waiting to hear from Taelorn to chime in on how critical he feels these non-period, non-region ships are to the game. They're not necessarily like galleons -- galleons are considered "OMG you can't have a pirate game without galleons!" type ships. Archipelago frigates? ...not so sure.

Also, there are limitations as to what strengths and weaknesses the game engine can model. A prime example of this is mortar vessels such as the Hielperinden: not only can we not currently model its main strength -- bombarding shore emplacements -- but we cannot model its awkward handling or sensitivity to sea conditions. There are similar problems there with the archipelago frigates; historically they'd be useful only in very calm seas due to their low freeboard. Right now we don't have changing sea conditions that provide this obvious self-balancing tradeoff.

1 in thread Technical UC Question [Flags and Sails]
Most game engines only work with texture files in powers of 2 -- 4 x 4, 16 x 16, 32 x 32, etc. So rather than make you guess what a flag will look like when scrunched to a 3:2 ratio, we let you submit them at that aspect and do the work for you.

As for why game engines use powers of 2, a programmer would have to answer that one. My only guess is that it just makes for easy computer math.

That should work OK in-game.

Sadly I can't contribute much more here than to point out that, from a shipwright's perspective, that model is a bit off on a plethora of technical points. I can't say whether or not it paints a good picture in broad brush strokes, though. I've been thwarted at almost every turn whenever I've tried to find decent period depictions of Ottoman square-rigged ships. The very, very scant evidence I've seen suggests they were pretty good mimics of European ships. I only have two examples though:

Action Between the Dutch Fleet and Barbary Pirates
(Dutch, circa 1670). The Ottoman ship is the large one with white flags, whose mainmast has just gone by the boards.

An English Ship in Action with Barbary Corsairs (English, circa 1680). The ship on fire is an Ottoman galleon.

Good luck! If you find anything else keep us posted, because believe me, I've looked...
