Spinnaker is correct. The difference is that the server transmits the information about the object, and then the client knows everything. In one scenario, it doesn't know the object exists. In the other scenario, it knows the objects exists therefore it knows everything. So, while the game would show the wrong ship, anyone could hack the client to see everything. Changing that is not a simple change, as it means revamping how the servers handle data transfer for objects.
