The net is all about Schadenfreude, and we knew going in it that people would scream end of the world.. Much harder to scream how WoW will die without your 15 bucks a month. :-)
I think, though, that the overwhelming urge to avoid any sign of weakness creates problems in games. It makes it so that the game creators don't want to admit they screwed up, and it freezes them from making necessary changes lest they be perceived as a sign of weakness. Which, in MMO terms, means you never shut down a server until you're gasping on life support.
We could have gone that way. As multiple people have said in this thread, they felt like their servers were perfectly viable. Our belief is that it'll be a lot better with a higher concentrated population. There are two ways to accomplish that. The first is with free trials (which we're working on) but that will be a bit in the future, and will be a slow build up. The second is to merge the servers, and take the PR hit. If we were like most other game company, we would have just kept the servers going and wait.
But I think that's the wrong approach, and the reason I think it's wrong is that there's no better advertising than word of mouth. Over the next few days we'll have a few stories about the servers merging, but then, after that? It's back to what players actually think. That's the long term buzz, and what we're focused on. By owning up to a mistake, and fixing it, and continuing to improve the game, we think that the buzz simply grows and grows, and we build up the game over time.
