Next time you run into this, let's get some more information.

First, before you start the client you'll need to turn on debug commands in pirates_local.ini:

sdc=true
Then when your sounds go wonky, type /showSounds. Expand your chat window to fill the screen vertically and send us a screenshot.

Also you may be able to fix the problem for a while with /reloadSounds.

We don't have any plans for a free trial right away...I mean, we just launched!

For all those making User Content, note the following from our 2D User Content Guidelines:

Sadly, I don't know how to merge threads, otherwise I'd kill that pretender thread I replied on.

To reiterate from that thread:

1) Yes, this is a hacky solution to the problem.
2) Both we and Nvidia think the problem is in the driver. If it turns out not to be in the driver, we'll tell you.
3) We're putting out a new patch will let you turn off the hacky fix in Preferences. A number of people have been able to avoid the flickering through a variety of fixes that aren't globally applicable (such as turning off vertical sync, or lowering anti-aliasing). If you're one of the lucky people, you'll be able to run at full speed by turning this off.

Most importantly, we're sorry that this problem exists, and we're doing everything we can to get to the bottom of it.

The goalposts are right here, my friend.

And remember: Beta was just that, beta. Which means not all systems were necessarily working as they should be. As noted here it wasn't until the 18th of this month that we got the UC texture converter configured properly. If you're seeing issues with sail transparencies in-game, try the fix mentioned in that thread; if that doesn't correct the issue, then please file a bug report. The transparent textures I've tested look just fine in-game.
