I understand the frustration that some folks have with the idea of censorship- while folks may couch it in the "freedom of speech" argument; the fact of the matter is that freedom of speech doesn't apply in this environment.
You aren't free to defame, harass, abuse, or use words that are found to be offensive to other people using our game service.
That last part is where the challenge lies. Flying Lab Software staffers want to believe that people will come and enjoy this world we've built without resorting to racial slurs or without naming themselves something offensive, but the reality of the situation that people will.
And they do. Sometimes, they are so creative that our automated systems don't catch the offense until they are reported by a fellow player. Here's what happens once that report is made:
A team of FLS staffers, including a representative from Design, Misha, myself, and every GM, reviews the foul word or naming convention in question. There is a brief discussion about the intent, the meaning and the impact of the word, and a consensus is reached.
9 times out of 10 we will opt to keep the word in circulation, rather than plug it in to the profanity filter.
While that is how the process works, we understand that there will be mistakes made. Both in our forum filter and our profanity filter. Could things be loosened a bit? I'm certainly not arguing against the idea.
At the end of the day, it boils down to this: If you run into a word that is filtered, either on our forums or in our game, that you believe should be unfiltered, then file a support ticket. Just like the folks who find something offensive.
We really are reasonable people, and we really are listening to what folks are saying. But like those who report potentially offensive words, we may not agree with your assessment of the word in question, and we will always reserve final say in the matter. The point being: You've got recourse, use it.
I hope that clarifies some of the process, let me know if you've got additional questions.
Best,
Aether
