I dont know what this insistance is on that pasty white background is. When it comes to text dark backgrounds and lighter plain fonts are much better regardless of game genre and environment. Is there some reason there is a resistance into putting in easier to read fonts and a better colour for chat box backgrounds? Truly it makes no sense all this work is being done yet the same readability problems with the chat box remains yet it has been a major issue for awhile.

I love the chat bubbles but the chat windows still are being left as clunky and with a pasty white background .. now it also seems a pasty obscuring photograph is being put into the box as well. This is not functional or practical and I just wish you would make a plain old chat window that I could reliably read
First, the new chat box doesn't have a picture background at all. It is a little more transparent than before, so you're seeing the town environment through the box. We lightened the background and darkened the font colors, so you'll see higher contrast than before.

We continue to work to make the chat itself more readable. While you probably won't ever see a black chat box with white text in the game, you will see a simpler font and some level of customization for the background. Since some people want their chat box to be 100% opaque, while others want transparency all the way, we're working on a solution to let you pick for yourself.

Why turn off defense unrest missions once at 5k? Maybe offensive missions should end at 4k and defense end at 6k. This way there would have to be some OS work to get the pirate zone up, since the attackers could only get to 4k via turn-ins and missions. But the defenders would then have 1k of headroom once pirate pvp appears to reduce the unrest.

That headroom would be what would encourage FTs to risk the red with a hold of unrest supplies.
We're thinking along these lines.

Patch in the non-SOL/line battle PB scenarios so that pirates can have a chance, and you see this.
Ideally the next offensive hotspot for the losing nation would show up more or less immediately, which probably means that the recently lost port would be the one AFTER that.

There are some port battle changes for pirates on the list, but I don't think they'll make it for 1.3.

I want to second some of ummax's chat readability concerns. The font used for chat is too light - a different (sans serif) font, or even a bolder version of this font, would greatly improve readability. Also, the period color pallette needs to be discard for the chat UI in favor of bold, high-contrast colors (or include both).

And if you've really, really, truly fixed the chat focus issues, this will be the bestest patch EVAR.

Quick edit: Do chat bubbles work in ship-space, or just for avatars?
Yes, chat bubbles work in ship space too.

As for the readability concerns- I agree with you 100%. We actually are doing what you say here - changing the font and colors to be more readable - but it won't be ready for the 1.2 patch.

This is an issue for a variety of reasons, but the primary one being that France on BB has 70ish people on at peak times, these days. Without this exploit, we wouldn't have to do 3 port battles within 15minutes of one another. We can only viably form the numbers for one, maybe two of battles. Saying, "Well, you guys DID lose the battle, so..." is a terrible excuse, and I think its one thing people will single out and attack.
Now that there are 4 pages of replies it's a bit late to go edit my post for content.

What happened to the French on Blackbeard sucks. So does what happened to the Spanish on Rackham. Yes, Blackbeard is the most extreme example, but that doesn't change the fact that this happened to just about every every server in some form or other. The rules that the British were playing by were messed up, but they were the rules. If France's position is truly unwinable, England, Spain, or the Brethren will step up and win the server so things will reset. At that point the level playing field will be the direct result of your actions, not ours. That's how it SHOULD be.

That's one of the approaches we're considering: have a maximum rate at which unrest can accrue, but let players fill up the queue with unrest that will apply over time. We don't know yet if that's the way it will go, but it's one thing we're talking about.

Since this is no longer an appeal but a request for feedback, I moved it out of the Appeals thread. I have two quick tips here:

1) You'll want to work on anti-aliasing, i.e. avoiding "the jaggies." I notice them even without my glasses on here Usually an easy way to fix that is to draw or trace your design much larger than the finished product and shrink it down for submission.

2) It's best to post a preview directly in the forum, where you can get and respond to feedback and easily make revisions, before submitting for review. It saves everyone a bit of time and potentially a bit of headache if, as will probably happen here, your revision gets sent back for further work None of us want that -- our common goal is to get a good design in-game.

I've repurposed this post to be your starting point for all your flags and sails, and will look forward to seeing your work. It's a fine design with good use of colors, and once you master the art of the smoothe line, I see many quality flags in your future.

Ice9, thank you for your measured and thoughtful response. Just as a reminder to everyone -- if something happens to your character in a mission that you don't like, you do always have the option of quiting out of the mission and cancelling it. Changes only become permanent once you complete it by turning it in for the reward (This is true for the mission where you choose your love interest as well, btw).

I realize this is probably cold comfort for you method RP'ers out there. However, your opinion has been heard -- and I will certainly bring the issue up with my betters.
